Cabinet Joinery - "White Melamine"

I am back after way too long an absence...thanks to being too old.
Last time we tested fasteners for the slides on melamine and settled on
two 5mm X 10mm screws in three locations each slide.. Now Elena looks over the instructions for mounting the slides. They are undermount slides so are brand new to both of us. It is nice to have a sample unit to try them out on.

Well we are going to get side tracked for a minute. We have been using the two new  Festool T-3 Lithium Ion Cordless Drills and we love them.

They are available in two different sizes: the T 12+3 and the T 15+3.   With the new Lithium Ion design, "the Festool T+3 offers greater torque than competing drills, even those with greater voltage." Those are words from the Festool website and Elena and I look forward to testing this.
They look so nice in their own systainers.

And each drill offers 5 different chucks. We have used them all in the past years but it is nice to see them sitting pretty together in this pic that we took from the Festool site. They are not "just nice to have." They all are very diferent in their use and make the drills, as the Festool website says "5 drills in one." And we have to agree.
Rather that spend time reviewing these new and more powerful screwdrivers, we will make use of them when working on our drawers.

Elena has installed the 5mm Vix Bit in one of the new cordless drills. It makes quick work of it.

She uses the second unit with a long number 2 square driver.  She likes the control that it gives her — to drive in home but slow down once there...no stripped screws here.

With the cabinet being open, Elena has no problem getting to the back screws. If the shelf hand been in place the right angle drive would have been useful.

Now we start figuring out how the drawers are installed. With the bottom mount, you do not screw the brackets on the side. Instead, the drawer sides fit into the bottom slide groove. The sides can be 3/8 to 1/2 inch in width. To simulate that, Elena has cut two strips 1/2" wide. I am pitting glue on one of the strips.

And I spray some activator on the bottom.

This is what the simulated bottom looks like.

I place the simulated bottom in place. It slides smoothly in an out on the bottommount slides. They are expensive but very nice.
