"Shop Gets a New Look"

No sooner than we organize the shop, we are re-organizing it. That is good. The smooth running of the shop is a work in progress as far as I am concerned. I realized that to use the edge bander logically, we would need a table surface to hold the panels before and after they were banded so I moved it over one station.

Another bit of fine tuning was the portable plunge saw. We have it moving between serving the MFT for cross cutting (Workstation 4) and the large work table (#1). Elena has now set the power cords on the floor in a way that the wheels will not have to run over them each time it is moved.
Here she is running the dust collection hose as far up the boom as is possible. This will allow the unit to serve the 4' X 8' work table without straining the hose.

Now to the infeed side of the Kapex.  We are using the Kreg fence kit to give us repetitive cuts on the Kapex.  Today, Elena and I are assembling the Kreg stops. They have a handy magnifier/cursor line that will be nice to use.

She has put together a flip stop. It is a very easy assembly or so we thought. There are only 3 parts and about 4 different ways they go together, one is correct. We managed to try all five ways before we got it right, but now that it is assembled, it will be a snap to use.

Now she is deciding how the measuring tape should be added. Since the left fence of the Kapex is used, it will keep the Kreg fence from being mounted near the actual cut. She measures the distance from the laser line to the left edge of the Kapex fence. It is 11" so that is where she will start the tape on the Kreg fence.

Elena has placed the steel tape that comes with the Kreg fence set. She starts it at the 11" mark. It has pressure sensitive tape so she carefully aligns the measure and then applies the tape.

And that is what it should be. The Kreg fence starts at 11 inches so that the stops will help measuring any cut of 11" and over.

Here Elena has position one of the Kreg stops. The arrow points to where a small magnifying cursor is located. This makes it much easier to set the distance to the saw kerf exactly except they want you to subtract 3/8" from your distance. That is the offset of the cursor line. No way do I want to subtract 3/8" from the distance I want. AAARRRGGGGG. The whole reason for mounting this fixture is to improve accuracy and reduce measuring errors. What if I want a distance of 15 5/16". I am not sure I can subtract 3/8" from that. There has to be a better way.

I slept on the problem. The solution is rather simple. Just move the tape over so that it is 3/8" shorter. It would have been simpler if the tape wasn't fixed to the fence. So I did the next best thing and that is to cut a notch so that the fence can be moved 3/8" to the right.

Now when you set the distance you want under the cursor (inset), the stop will give you that exact measure.
